Gold is virtually indestructible.
It is scarce, too. To make a single wedding ring, one would have to pulverize 250 tons of rock and chemically treat it. To this day, only 185,000 tons of gold exist. Here are some other facts about gold:
* All the gold in the world could also neatly fit under the Eiffel Tower.
* An ounce of gold is worth $1000 or more today.
* Gold is extremely malleable and an ounce can be pounded down into 5 micrometers thick. Five micrometers, to get a good perspective on it, is 1/10th the diameter of a human hair.
* Gold can be made so thin that it becomes a translucent sheet.
* Astronauts use it as a thin sheet over their visors to protect their eyes from glare.
* Gold also has an anti-inflammatory property to it, as well as other medicinal purposes.
* Egyptians were the first to use it as a coin for money trade, although not the first to use it altogether.
* The first civilization to discover and use it were the ancient Samarians and Mesopotamians, who used it to adorn themselves.
