The figures may be a little too old today, tracing back to the 2008 CSI Computer crime and Security Survey, but with the rise in use of moveable gadgets such as laptops and tablets since then, they may as well be a little higher even. These figures are particularly directed at our American brethren. According to the FBI, a laptop is stolen every 53 seconds and about 97 percent of those are never recovered. Not only that, one in every 10 laptops will be stolen within the first year of purchase.
US airports report up to 12,000 stolen or missing laptops each week, with 70% of them never reclaimed. The stolen or lost laptops and other mobile devices continue to be the most recurrent cause of data breach, the cost of which averages $197 per record.
You don’t need to be told that data breach can be devastating, especially when targeted at large corporations. In the year 2008, 42% of all corporate security incidents were as a result of a stolen laptop, coming second only to insider abuse and viruses. And with 60% of vital corporate data residing on laptop and desktop computers that are not protected properly, the cost of recovery itself can be immense. At the time of the survey, the cost of recovering from a single data breach was about $6.3 million. 2007 saw 50 percent of organizations in America report theft of laptops or mobile devices.
