The South Pole is a Desert!

That seems counter-intuitive, but it's true.
The South Pole's average January temperatures are about -15 degrees Fahrenheit, and it dips down to about -49 degrees Fahrenheit by March.

There are no camels wandering around, instead there are 4 species of penguins. How then, can the South Pole be considered a desert? Well, for one thing, the desert classification has nothing to do with temperature or sand or camels; it has to do with precipitation, namely, the lack of it.

The South Pole has a desert climate because it almost never receives precipitation. The air humidity is near 0.When it does snow however, the low temperatures are able to sustain it and the high winds cause it to blow around, thus resulting in a total snow accumulation of 7.9 inches per year. This also renders the South Pole as inhabitable as any other desert.

There is approximately 500 Kg of gold in 1 cubic Km of sea water!!
Economically speaking 1 cubic km of sea water would cost 1.4 billion dollars (excluding other minerals present in it)!

--But don't get excited, extracting gold from sea water is like finding a grain of rice in Sahara desert.

Qiandao Lake:
The Thousand Island Lake and Ancient Submerged Cities

Qiandao Lake or the Thousand Island Lake is located in Zhejiang, China, about 150 kilometers from the city of Hangzhou. It is an artificial lake formed after the completion of the Xin'an River hydroelectric station. In 1959, in order to build the Xin'anjiang Reservoir the valley was flooded with water resulting in a lake or reservoir 573 square km in area and with a storage capacity of 17.8 cubic km. The lake is so called because it is dotted with 1,078 large islands and a few thousand smaller ones across it.

But what lies underneath the lake is perhaps more interesting and worthy than the lake itself.
Before the valley was flooded, there stood at the foot of the Wu Shi mountain (Five Lion Mountain) two magnificent ancient cities - Shi Cheng and He Cheng. Shi Cheng was built more than 1300 years ago in 621 AD during the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907). Both He Cheng and Shi Cheng were drowned in September 1959 when the Chinese government decided that it needed a new hydroelectric power station and a reservoir to feed the ever growing population in the city of Hangzhou. Along with the two ancient towns, another 27 towns, 1,377 villages, almost 50,000 acres of farmland and thousands of residential homes were flooded. About 290,000 people were relocated for the project

*OARFISH*

The fish is called +Regalecus russelii+ or the +Streamer fish.+ It is a member of the Oarfish family and lives 1,000m beneath the sea and is rarely seen on the surface unless sick or dying. They also happen to look like some sort of mythical sea serpent.

It's no wonder that there is a legend surrounding the fish. In Japanese folklore the Oarfish acts as a messenger of warning from the Sea God's Palace. Whenever they appear on the beaches of Japan, an earthquake is imminent.

The oarfish is an extraordinary looking animal. Finding a fish that looks like a sea serpent is likely to make a strong impression on anybody's mind. If a second extraordinary thing such as an earthquake happens later on, it is human nature to connect the two events even if there is no actual connection between them.

Ferdinand Marcos Statue in Pugo La Union.
The bust of the late Philippine strongman Ferdinand Marcos lies badly defaced Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at Mt. Pugo, La Union province in northern Philippines, a day after it was ripped in a powerful explosion shortly after midnight Sunday.

The explosion ripped off the eyes, nose, ears and most of the upper part of the bust but did not topple it from the top of a cliff overlooking the South China Sea, where it was erected in the 1970s, allegedly to immortalize the strongman who was toppled in a near bloodless "People Power" revolution in 1986.

Jack Long's High Speed Photographs of Paint Splashes that Looks Like Flowers...!!

At first glance, this incredible image look like still-life portrait of some exotic flower.
But no; this is actually high speed photograph of colored water, captured in a way to mimic the shape of blooms, leaves, and even pots.

Artist Jack Long uses water mixed with thickeners and dyes and then uses an electronic flash to capture the right moment as the mixture falls through the air. His work takes months of painstaking planning and testing.

Pied Piper Duck Show in Australia...!!

Easter parades occur all over the world, but in Sydney, Australia, a very special parade takes place. Behatted ducks in pink, green and yellow outfits waddle down the catwalk in the Pied Piper Duck Show at one of Australia's most famous annual country festivals. The show is a part of the 14-day Sydney Royal Easter Show which is the largest annual event staged in Australia, attracting an average of 900,000 visitors.

Aside from fashion parades, the Pied Piper Duck Show also showcase Racing Ducks, which have the crowds roaring in laughter as they cheer on their favorite duck. And of course, there are food stalls that offer everything from steak sandwiches, souvlakis, baked potatoes, strawberries, ice-cream, milkshakes, and duck roast too.

Hanging Coffins (Philippines).

About six hours by bus from the Luzon island town of Banaue, north of Manila, Philippines ,the people of Sagada have devised a unique burial ritual involving the placement of dead relatives into caves after carefully preparing a hollowed out log.
These coffins are carved by the elderly before they die; if they are too ill or weak their son or other close relative will do it for them. This ritual involves pushing the bodies into the tight spaces of the coffins, and often bones are cracked and broken as the process is completed.

After the deceased are put inside these coffins they are then brought to caves high in the cliffs where they join the coffins of other ancestors.
The Segada people prefer to be buried in the cliffs than to be buried in the ground and have been doing this for more than 2,000 years. !......,,,,,,,

Why dogs hate cats. Wait! Do they?

When a dog first sees a cat, particularly if it has never seen a cat, it will go bounding up to the cat. The dog rushes to the cat with different social expectations than that of the cat. The dog will expect to be able to sniff at the cat's hind end as a social exchange and the cat does not want any of that. Other social behaviors that the dog may do that will turn off the cat include the wagging tail.

~ The problem with the wagging tail is that its movement means different things to the dog and the cat. To the dog, the wagging tail is a social greeting that usually indicates happiness. To the cat, the wagging tail means displeasure and even anger. When the dog rushes to the cat with a wagging tail, the cat may interpret this as hostility. In return, when the dog sees the wagging tail on the cat, it may interpret this as a sign of friendliness when in fact the cat really feels hostility.

~ When the dog tries to sniff the cat, the cat may react by running off or attacking the dog. If the cat attacks the dog after the dog's friendly or not so friendly approach, the dog's attitude towards the cat and even other cats has been altered to the point where the dog may appear to hate cats.

Dogs may hate cats, particularly when the two animals misunderstand each other from the beginning. Not all cats and dogs hate each other.

The balconies of the Willis tower in Chicago - not for people who have vertigo!

The owners of the Sears Tower, the tallest skyscraper in the United States (Chicago), inaugurated last week four glass box viewing platforms. These balconies are suspended 1,353 feet (412 meters) in the air on the 103rd floor. They are 10ft high and 10ft wide and can hold 5 tons with their 1.5 inch thick glasses.

Eagle Eyes!!

If you swapped your eyes for an eagle's, you could see an ant crawling on the ground from the roof of a 10-story building.
You could make out the expressions on basketball players' faces from the worst seats in the arena.

Objects directly in your line of sight would appear magnified, and everything would be brilliantly colored, rendered in an inconceivable array of shades.

Easy Tips to looking fit and lean!!

1: Reduce stress:
Stress can slow down your metabolism. Stress can cause weight gain. Stress makes you crave for fattier, salty, and sugary foods. Overall stress is bad for your health.

2: Don't eat before going to bed:
Eating before sleeping can impact your weight. Stop eating 3 hours before you go to sleep. Metabolism slows down when you sleep, turning food into fat. You should feel hungry before going to bed.

3: Green tea is great:
Taking Green tea can help burn excess fat. It can stimulate metabolism thereby burning more calories. It can help suppress appetite.

THE FIFTH OLDEST TREE IN THE WORLD WAS BURNED DOWN BY A METH ADDICT!

It was called "The Senator Tree" and it was the oldest pond cypress tree in the world, and the fifth oldest tree known to scientists in the entire world.
Located in Big Tree Park, Longwood, Florida, the Senator was estimated to be roughly 3,500 years old at the time of its demise.

It was revered by the Seminole Indians and other Native Americans as a landmark because it was so large, reaching 125 feet in height and 17.5 feet in diameter!
On January 16th 2012 the top of the Senator tree mysteriously caught fire, resulting in the tree burning inside out.

Although firefighters attempted to put out the blaze, unfortunately it burnt down. On February 28th of 2012, the Division of Forestry arrested Sara Barnes (inset), who would routinely go to the tree to use various drugs.

Barnes claims she lit a fire at night so she could see and that it got out of control, igniting the tree. However, the blaze is reported to have started near the top of the tree and rumors persist that Barnes intentionally set it on fire while hallucinating on methampethamine.

Yet some people believe that the tree is still alive. They have spotted saplings at the base of the big tree. Officials also said that the tree was cloned at one point, and they are searching to bring the clones back.

50 CENT SAYS HE'S NEVER DONE DRUGS!

To say that rapper 50 Cent had a difficult childhood would be an understatement.Born as Curtis Jackson III, he grew up in an impoverished urban neighborhood in Queens, New York.

He was raised without a father and his mother died when he was 8, after which he went to live with his grandparents and 8 aunts and uncles.
At the age of 12, he began dealing narcotics as a way to raise money.

However it never crossed his mind, even to this day, to take those drugs. He saw what they did to his mother's siblings and would rather save than money than blow it on drugs. At a correctional boot camp, he adopted the name 50 cent as a metaphor for "change." He is now a successful rapper, entrepreneur, investor, record producer, and actor.

A MAN COMPLETED THE FIRST AIRPLANE FLIGHT 9 MONTHS BEFORE THE WRIGHT BROTHERS!

His name was Richard Pearse and he was from New Zealand. A farmer and inventor, Pearse performed ground breaking aviation experiments months before the Wright brothers, yet is hardly ever credited.

Why?
There are several reasons. Pearse was an extremely modest person and not in the slightest way a publicity seeker. On March 31, 1903, he flew and landed a powered heavier-than-air machine successfully, yet because of where he lived and lack of monetary funds, the chance of industrial development was slim to nil.

Pearse flew 350 meters down a field and landed safely, yet there was no photographic evidence of his achievement.
Some claim that when the Wright brothers flew on December 17 of 1903 for the first time, they used much of the engineering and techniques developed by Richard Pearse!

EGYPTIANS WERE THE FIRST CIVILIZATION TO USE GOLD FOR TRADE.

Gold is virtually indestructible.
It is scarce, too. To make a single wedding ring, one would have to pulverize 250 tons of rock and chemically treat it. To this day, only 185,000 tons of gold exist. Here are some other facts about gold:

* All the gold in the world could also neatly fit under the Eiffel Tower.

* An ounce of gold is worth $1000 or more today.

* Gold is extremely malleable and an ounce can be pounded down into 5 micrometers thick. Five micrometers, to get a good perspective on it, is 1/10th the diameter of a human hair.

* Gold can be made so thin that it becomes a translucent sheet.

* Astronauts use it as a thin sheet over their visors to protect their eyes from glare.

* Gold also has an anti-inflammatory property to it, as well as other medicinal purposes.

* Egyptians were the first to use it as a coin for money trade, although not the first to use it altogether.

* The first civilization to discover and use it were the ancient Samarians and Mesopotamians, who used it to adorn themselves.

SOME MONKS CAN INCREASE THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE SO MUCH THEY CAN DRY SOAKING SHEETS IN A FREEZING ROOM!

A Buddhist monk had himself placed in a freezing cold room under the surveillance of scientists in Normandy, France to prove the power of meditation. What occurred astonished people around the world.

The monk was covered in a wet blanket, and during his meditation session produced so much body heat that the blanket was dry by the end. Death could easily result from being drenching in a freezing room, but through the use of meditation called Tum-mo they are protected.

Buddhists believe that the reality we exist in is not the ultimate one, and only through meditation and doing good can they achieve this ultimate reality. The heat they generate is just a byproduct of Tum-mo meditation, and to this day scientists are still not exactly sure why this happens!

THE MOST DECORATED DOG IN HISTORY

Sergeant Stubby

Sergeant Stubby (1916 or 1917 – March 16, 1926), was the most decorated war dog of World War I and the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat.

Stubby was found on the Yale campus in 1917 by John Robert Conroy. He was an American Pit Bull Terrier. Stubby marched with Conroy and even learned an approximate salute. When Conroy's unit shipped out to France, Stubby was smuggled aboard the transport SS Minnesota.

Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry, 26th (Yankee) Division in the trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and 17 battles. He entered combat on February 5, 1918 at Chemin des Dames, north of Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month. In April 1918, during a raid to take Schieprey, Stubby was wounded in the foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on the front was able to improve morale. When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the trenches.

After being gassed himself, Stubby learned to warn his unit of poison gas attacks, located wounded soldiers in no man's land, and — since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells before humans could — became very adept at letting his unit know when to duck for cover. He was solely responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne. Following the retaking of Château-Thierryby the US, the thankful women of the town made Stubby a chamois coat on which were pinned his many medals. There is also a legend that while in Paris with Corporal Conroy, Stubby saved a young girl from being hit by a car. At the end of the war, Conroy smuggled Stubby home. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Stubby)

The commander of the 102nd Infantry promoted Stubby to sergeant after he captured a German spy who was mapping positions. Stubby spotted the spy skulking in the brush. The spy called to Stubby but Stubby knew he was up to no-good. He held the prisoner, barking and biting at the man's heels and legs. Troops arrived and relieved him of his position. HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE !!!!

Let's say it's 7.15pm and you're going home (alone of course),
after an unusually hard day on the job.
You're really tired, upset and frustrated.
Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself..!!

NOW HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE..

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.
A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

Rather than sharing jokes please.. contribute by Sharing this which can save a person's life!!!!

A request to all frnd...do not forget to share this article to spread dis basic awareness...as a medical person its our duty to spread such imp basic info which can SAVE LIFE of someone.....

Cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev holds the world record for TIME TRAVEL.
He traveled 0.02 seconds into the future.

Yes, folks, it is possible to travel in time, at least, to travel to the future. There's no time-traveling phone booths.
What Avdeyev did to travel in time is to orbit the Earth 11,968 times over the course of 748 days in the Mir space station. By the time his stint in space was over, he had experienced 0.2 seconds less than the rest of the world did.

This made him 0.2 seconds younger than he would have been if he had never gone into space. To put it in another way, he traveled 0.02 seconds into the future.

Hypothetically, you travel a whole lot more in time if you traveled faster, closer to the speed of light.

"Another tiny rock will pass by Earth tonight/tomorrow at around 07:00 UTC (03:00 Eastern US time). Called 2012 KT42, it's probably less than 10 meters across — about the size of a school bus or more likely a minivan. And it'll be a close shave: though the orbit is still not nailed down, the nominal miss distance is about 14,500 kilometers (8900 miles). That's a bit bigger than the diameter of the Earth itself.

Bear in mind, it was only discovered last night, so the current orbit is preliminary. Many small rocks that pass close to Earth are discovered shortly before they breeze past us (and some not until after), so this is nothing out-of-the ordinary.

And since some people tend to get upset about these things, I'll point out that as of right now, it looks like it will miss us. And even if newer observations show it hitting us, this rock is way too small to do any damage. At that size, it'll break up in the atmosphere and make a spectacular light show, but not much else. This has happened countless times with asteroids this size.

Another way to think about this is that rocks this size pass us all the time, but you never hear about them hurting us; that's because they don't! The smaller the asteroid the more common they are, but the less they can do to us. At this size, there's no danger."

"Calgary tops ranking of world's cleanest cities"

According to the consulting, outsourcing and investment firm Mercer, Calgary was ranked as the cleanest city in the world in 2011. They analysed data from 221 cities. Water quality and availability, air pollution, sewage system, and waste removal were some of the aspect taken into account.

The merit for Calgary of being ranked the cleanest city ...in the world is greater considering that Calgary is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada with a growth rate of 18 per thousand, and the province of Alberta leads Canada in per capita waste.

The modern and ebullient city of Calgary is doing it well to keep a clean look that matches the natural beauty of the surrounding Rocky Mountains.

MAMMATUS CLOUDS

Often times mammatus clouds form during a thunderstorm. During a thunderstorm there is a strong updraft which draws water molecules up from below. Up in the sky, the water condenses, becoming part of the thunderstorm cloud (anvil cloud). Because of the updraft, the water still rises and rises until it gets to the altitude of 57,000 feet. At this altitude, the water freezes into ice crystals and spreads out side to side. The ice crystals, grouped together, begin to sink because they have a higher density than the air. When the sinking ice crystals reach the bottom of the thunderstorm cloud, they sink a little bit more because of the large clusters of ice, and then stop creating a melon-field like impression of clouds.

To sum that up into one sentence: mammatus clouds form from cold icy air sinking from the top to the bottom of a thunderstorm cloud.

The Komondor :O

The Komondor is a large, white-colored Hungarian breed of livestock guardian dog with a long, corded coat. Sometimes referred to as 'mop dogs,' the Komondor is a long-established powerful dog breed that has a natural guardian instinct to guard livestock and other property.
The Komondor breed has been declared one of Hungary's national treasures, to be preserved and protected from modification.
The Komondor is a large dog (many are over 30 inches tall), making this one of the largest common breeds of dog, or a molosser. The body is covered by a heavy, matted, corded coat.

With those dreadlocks, I bet it is 'The' Bob Marley of the canine world. :)

4) Baby carrots aren't exactly young carrots, they're actually carrots that have been peeled and cut into uniform cylinders.

5) If cows eat too many carrots, their milk tastes bitter.

KOLKATA BOY SHOURYYA RAY SOLVES 350-YEAR-OLD MATHS PROBLEM SET BY SIR ISAAC NEWTON !!

Shouryya currently in Dresden has cracked a 350-year-old maths problem set by Sir Isaac Newton.

His solutions mean that scientists can now calculate the flight path of a thrown ball and then predict how it will hit and bounce off a wall.

Ray came across the problems during a school trip to Dresden University where professors claimed they were uncrackable. "I just asked myself, Why not?," says Ray.

"I think it was just school boy naivety. I didn't believe there couldn't be a solution," he added.

Ray began solving complicated equations as a six-year-old but says he's no genius. His intelligence was quickly noted in class and he was pushed up two years in school- he is currently sitting his exams early.

"There are other things at school I wish I was better at - football for one," he said.

For years Shouryya has enjoyed what he calls 'intrinsic beauty' of maths.

When he was young, his father, an engineer, began testing his brain by setting him arithmetic problems.

Shouryya has pointed out he has weak points as a mathematician, and says he is not as competent in sport.

Arjun Tendulkar slams maiden hundred U-14 tournament

Arjun Tendulkar, son of Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar, slammed his first century of his career in the Mumbai Cricket Association's Under-14 selection trials held at the Cross Maidan in Mumbai on Saturday.

The 12-year old made 124 to help Khar Gymkhana beat Goregaon Centre by an innings and 21 runs and enter the final of the tournament. He hit 14 boundaries and a six during his knock.

Arjun, who is a left hander unlike his father, had scored 64 runs in his previous match during this MCA summer vacation tournament that also serves as selection trials to the U-14 team.

Arjun made his debut at the national level in January last year in the Cadence Trophy in Pune. He has been in news since then. In the same tournament this year, he made 65 off 39 balls against PCMC Varroc Vengsarkar CA.

Arjun, who also bowls left-arm pace, impressed everyone with his bowling prowess when he finished with figures of eight for 22 that helped Dhirubhai Ambani International School beat Jamnabai Narsee School in November 2011.

Born on 24th September 1999, Arjun is often seen going to the stadium to watch his father play and enthusiastically cheering for him.

*** Albert Einstein's Last Words ***

Albert Einstein died in his sleep at a hospital in Princeton, New Jersey on April 18, 1955, leaving the Generalized Theory of Gravitation unsolved. The only person present at his death bed, a hospital nurse, said that just before his death he mumbled several words in German. But the nurse didn't understand German.

So Einstein's "last words" remain a mystery.

The Netherlands is closing 8 prisons due to a lack of prisoners!

Right now, the Netherlands prisons can hold 14,000 prisoners, but they only have 12,000. So, they're going to shut down 8 prisons. They have a decreasing amount of crime in the country.

In contrast, the UK has 94,000 prisoners with a population of 62 million people while the Netherlands has a population of 16.2 million.
Many of the UK's prisoners are there related to marijuana. They have twice as many prisoners in regards to percentage.

The U.S. has the highest crime rate in the world. They estimate that 40% of the population could be in jail for small-time drug crimes. It's costing taxpayers billions of dollars. It also causes severe over crowding in jails and prisons.

The U.S, in stark contrast to the Netherlands, has to open more prisons often. An argument is that if Proposition 19 were to pass, the U.S. could have the chance to be like the Netherlands and begin shutting down some prisons. At the very least, it would save billions of taxpayer dollars and maybe even give more attention to bigger crimes and manpower to handle them.
